Folklorista Awards
The Folklorista Awards were created to honor and recognize Latinos for their achievements in disseminating Folklorico Danza in the US. To recognize the excellence and create a greater public awareness of the artistic accomplishments of Mexican Folklorico dancers, choreographers, dance teachers, producers, and ambassadors in the US. As well as to identify these individuals as role models by showcasing their success
These initial Awards were presented at the GALA to:
Pioneer Award ----------------- Lilly Aguilar (in memoriam)
Began dancing in 1929, first teacher of LA County, her students have formed Paso de Oro, Relampago del Cielo, and more.
Breakthrough Folklorista ---- Miguel Delgado (in memoriam)
Became a choreographer in Hollywood, an Actor and producer, founded Teatro Mexicano de Danza.
Gran Maestro ------------------ Emilio Pulido (in memoriam)
Founded Folklorico de la Universidad de Guadalajara and taught at UCLA, CAL State LA, & USC.
Contribution Award ----------- Rosie Peña
Member of Padua Hills dancers in the 1940's, Founder of Relampago del Cielo.
Exemplary Institution --------- Plaza de la Raza
Cultural Arts center in the hearth of East LA, opening artistic opportunities to thousands of underpriviliged students.
